Building a team that is passionately committed to the educational mission of the school starts with recruiting. Dr. James Bushman, the principal of University High School, a charter school in Fresno, CA, speaks to principals and headmasters from around the United States at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture about how UHS hires for values and talent.

While hiring for a cultural fit is key, "It’s important to understand that hiring for culture fit doesn’t mean hiring people who are all the same," writes Katie Bouton for the Harvard Business Review. Hiring for aligned values has many benefits, Bouton says. "A 2005 analysis revealed that employees who fit well with their organization, coworkers, and supervisor had greater job satisfaction, were more likely to remain with their organization, and showed superior job performance." The hard work that Dr. Bushman did in defining the school's values and culture will likely have long-lasting results.
